The Otz Chayim, the Tree of Life, is simply (or not so simply) a diagram. Its first historical appearance is in the fourth century B.C., when the Jewish civilization, captive after conquest by the Babylonian Empire ("by the waters of Babylon"), began to write about it. It has been kept alive since that time in the heart of the ancient field of study known generically as the Kabbala. The fact that scholars have spend two thousand years trying to understand it suggests that something of great value is hidden there.
